Finishing The Pool

Finishing the pool is exciting. Within a week you will be able to start using your new pool. If you have children they will be asking every day if the pool is finished.

The last stages of the pool building process are..water features, decking, tile and coping, clean up, fencing, barrier requirements, final city inspection, interior surfacing of the pool and start up.

Water Features

If your pool contains any boulder work, such as accent rocks, or waterfalls, this work will be done now. This allows the deck and tile crews to finish up these items and give them a professional and clean appearance.

Deck Forming

If you want any changes made, they must be initiated priorto the forming phase. You can make changes to your decking by contacting the supervisor of your pool project. Changescould delay the pool project and of course there may be some charges associated with this. You may want to placesleeves of PVC under the decking areas for any future electrical, sprinkler, or other lines that need to pass under the deck.
Pool Deck

This is what gives your pool a finished look. The decking that surrounds your pool can be concrete, brick, stone or other materials. Here in the Southwest we use a material that is cool to the touch so that we can walk barefoot around our pool without burning our feet.

This material is called Kooldeck. You will need to put in expansion joints at this time to keep the decking material from cracking. Any deck changes that you want to make should be done now. After they pour the deck it will be very costly to make changes.

Tile and Coping

The tile specialists will install coping around the perimeter of your pool.

You can use different materials for coping such as brick or stone. Next the tile is placed, leveled and finished to add a beautiful accent to your pool. Make sure that the tile is frost proof and is used specifically for swimming pools.

If your pool is to have an acrylic overlay applied to the concrete on your deck, this would be done at this time. Don't walk on the material for 24 hours.

Clean Up

All of the construction materials will be cleaned up in both the interior and exterior of the pool. Any destruction to the landscaping, holes etc are filled in at this time. Clean up is done just prior to the plastering of the pool.

Fencing

If you had an exterior fence taken down during construction, it would be put back up at this time by either the home owner or your pool company.

Barrier Requirements

Check with your local city government to see if there are any barrier requirements that prevent children from entering the pool. These would be installed before your pre plaster inspection. Your pool builder representative will advise you on these requirements as well.

Interior Finishing

The interior plaster is applied in two coats and then hand troweled to a non-slip waterproof surface. If your surface is white you should add small colored tiles to the steps and benches for safetypurposes.

Pebble Tec and Pebble Sheen are other choices for the interior of the pool and are the original alternative to a plaster pool. A natural Pebble pool can provide a lifetime of worry-free relaxation.

When the finish is complete they willadd water to your pool with a garden hose. You

must completely fill the pool without stoppingto prevent a ring (like a bathtub ring)from stainingyour pool.

Start Up

When the pool is complete and the water is filled tothe proper level, a start up person from your pool builder will start up your pool equipment. You willneed to be there for the start up so that the poolrepresentative can instruct you on the use of yourpool. This usually takes about an hour.

Remember that you will need to check your chemicals and empty the skimmer and leaf baskets with regularity.
