What is a solar pool heater?

A solar pool heater uses your pool's filter pump to make water flow through solar collectors where it is heated to the desired temperature and then directly returned to your pool. There is an automatic control that senses any change in sunlight or water temperature and this information is passed on to the control valve.

The collectors or panels can be mounted on your roof or a ground rack. The panels can be facing any direction that will be exposed to sunlight for most of the day. It doesn't have to face south as east and west facing collectors will do just as well.

Is this expensive?

The initial cost of putting in a solar pool heater is about the same as installing an electric heat pump. And of course there are no operating costs as the Sun is free. .

One of the benefits is that having a solar swimming pool heater is that it can increase the value of your home.
